Ranganathan did not want to wait till the weekend, to take a trip to Chengalpettu, to meet the great Astrologer Desikachari. So he took a day’s casual leave and went to consult Desikachari. Desikachari studied the horoscope in great detail and came to the conclusion, that both the horoscopes were perfectly matching with the unusual ten poruthams which meant that they were ideally suited to each other. But the only problem was, according to Madhavan's horoscope, that he should get married in the next couple of months. If not, the next auspicious time would only be after 3 years
When Ranganathan expressed his inability to conduct Madhavan's marriage at such a short notice, Desikachari said that at least he should get engaged to the girl now and marriage could be conducted later, after 3 years. Though this ultimatum dampened Ranganathan's enthusiasm considerably, he was very happy that the great astrologer's verdict was in his favour. So, he paid Rs 200 instead of Desikacahari's consulting fees, Rs 150 and took leave from him.
Once he reached home, Ranganathan explained in great detail, Desikacari's opinion, to an anxious Vasumathy and her Amma. They too, were very much surprised at the turn of events, but preferred an early marriage, to a very long engagement. Then, to Ranganathan's great surprise, Vasumathy suggested that they could ring up Saroja and ask her to inform her brother, Raman about Madhavan's proposal. If Raman agreed for bride seeing, Madhavan could be contacted to go to LA, as they had very little time at their disposal.
That weekend, when Madhavan called, Ranganathan in a matter of fact tone, told him about Lakshmi's proposal. Later Vasumathy and her Amma talked about Lakshmi's beauty, brains, traditional upbringing and powerful matching horoscope with 10 Poruthams.
Though shocked by the suddenness of the marriage proposal, Madhavan was not unhappy about it. In fact, he was, to a great extent, relieved that he could get married to a beautiful doctor, whom his parents found for him. He knew it was impossible for him to fall in love with any girl, leave alone a beautiful Iyengar girl and get married. Though he was flattered by Amma's and Patty's voicing their worst fears, that he would be hooked by Vellakkaris, he knew in his heart of hearts, that, girls white or dark would never, ever, fall for a diffident, shy, hopelessly introverted boy like him. He firmly believed that he could never overcome his shyness towards the opposite sex, due to his Tamil medium education and Orthodox middle class upbringing. But now, everything was offered
to him on a silver platter. A beautiful girl, that too a money- minting future Doctor, who could get him the coveted Green Card meaning a permanent footing in the Land of Opportunity. He could not believe his good fortune.

It was Nari's talk on marriage that made him seriously think of settling down in life. So far, he was struggling to reach his goal of a good job. Now that he got the job, he needed someone to bring order to his chaotic life, someone to end the horrible loneliness, to share his joy and sorrow, in short, someone to bring sunshine into his life. No doubt, he was convinced of an arranged marriage and thought he should approach his Amma next time he went on leave. But nothing had prepared him for such an incredible windfall of fortune, that too, so soon. He gave a token protest- "Why Amma, so soon? I don't think I'm ready for marriage now”.. which, of course, was ignored, the way it was intended to. By the end of Madhavan's call to his family, he was mentally prepared for his bride seeing and waited for Raman's call from LA..
